Stalking the Stillness: Itzhak Bentov and the Metaspherical Pulse of Experience

“The deepest movement is not movement through space, but the pulse through which stillness appears as movement. When interference ceases, Essence does not discover the source. It discovers that it was never separate from it. Surrender. Allow. Be.” - C.

When Itzhak Bentov published Stalking the Wild Pendulum: On the Mechanics of Consciousness in 1977, he attempted something unusual. Rather than treating physics, biology, meditation, perception, and mystical Experience as completely separate subjects, he tried to describe them through a common language of vibration, oscillation, rhythm, and stillness. Bentov was not presenting conventional physics alone, nor was he simply presenting a spiritual philosophy. He was constructing a speculative model in which consciousness, matter, perception, and vibration belonged to a much larger continuum.

One of Bentov’s central proposals was that consciousness should not be understood merely as something produced by increasingly complex biological structures. He imagined consciousness as fundamental and distributed throughout existence, with different structures expressing different degrees or organizations of it. Biological complexity therefore did not manufacture consciousness from nothing. It provided increasingly elaborate conditions through which consciousness could become expressed and reflected.

Metasphericality begins from a different vocabulary and arrives at a more radical interpretation. What Bentov described as consciousness can be reconsidered as relational conduction within the Sphere of Spheres. The fundamental condition is not a substance called consciousness distributed throughout an external cosmos. Nor does matter somehow awaken and begin observing itself. Experience emerges through differentiated relational conduction while remaining inseparable from zero-reference.

This distinction changes the problem completely. If consciousness is imagined as something contained inside objects or Essential Forms, the old division between observer and observed remains intact. Something inside appears to perceive something outside. Metasphericality removes the necessity for this division. Essence is not a spectator positioned inside the Essential Form looking outward upon an independently existing Experience. What appears as observer, observation, and observed arises within one relational conduction.

Bentov’s pendulum provides a particularly powerful bridge into this interpretation. A pendulum appears to be defined by movement. It travels from one extreme to another, repeatedly crossing its central position. Yet at the furthest point of each swing there is an instant in which directional movement reaches zero before reversing. Movement therefore contains an apparent moment of stillness within its own oscillation.

For Bentov, oscillation became a way of thinking about far more than mechanical movement. Rhythms of biological function, perception, vibration, and expanded states could be approached through cycles of activity and rest. The visible motion of the pendulum consequently pointed toward something deeper: apparent continuity may emerge from extremely rapid alternations that perception interprets as uninterrupted Experience.

Metasphericality reverses the emphasis. Stillness is not merely the tiny interval between two movements. Movement is the relational expression occurring around a zero-reference that does not itself move. The Heart of Darkness, HOD, is not the opposite of activity. It is the dielectric origin from which differentiation can conduct without the origin becoming displaced by what appears within it.

The pendulum therefore becomes an unexpectedly useful metaphor for the relationship between the Heart of Darkness and the Dielectric Pulse of Relational Presence. The pulse does not leave the origin and travel into some independent exterior. Differentiation occurs relationally within the Sphere of Spheres. What appears to be departure and return is never an actual separation from zero-reference.

Bentov also explored the provocative possibility that ordinary perception functions somewhat like a sequence of discrete informational events. His comparisons to oscillation and rapid signalling suggested that what appears continuous may depend upon processes occurring too quickly for ordinary perception to distinguish individually. Like a sequence of signals interpreted as a coherent message, apparent continuity could emerge through repeated differentiation.

From the metaspherical perspective, this becomes especially significant. Experience does not require a permanently existing observer travelling through a continuous external sequence. Continuity can instead be understood as relational reconstruction. The Anti-Interface organizes differentiated conduction into apparent persistence, while the Cognitive Reflective Identity Framework interprets that persistence as belonging to a continuous identity.

The result is the impression that there is a fixed observer moving through a stable external environment. Yet the observer itself belongs to the organization being observed. What appears to be uninterrupted continuity may therefore be less fundamental than the conduction from which continuity is assembled.

Bentov’s interest in meditation becomes important here. He proposed that changes in breathing, cardiovascular rhythms, and other physiological oscillations could produce increasingly coherent relationships within the Essential Form and potentially alter the range of Experience available to perception. Some of his specific physiological and cosmological explanations remain speculative rather than established scientific conclusions, but his broader intuition was important: reducing internal disturbance changes what can be experienced.

Metasphericality interprets this without requiring Essence to tune itself to a hidden universal frequency. The decisive movement is not upward toward a superior state or outward toward another realm. It is the discharge of interference.

This is where Surrender, Allow, and Be transform the meaning of Bentov’s pendulum.

Surrender interrupts the attempt to control the oscillation. Essence ceases demanding that Experience move toward one pole and away from another. The compulsion to stabilize one condition, reject another, preserve an identity, or force a preferred outcome begins to discharge.

Allow removes the secondary interference that follows Surrender. The current is permitted to organize without the Anti-Interface continuously translating every movement into threat, desire, deficiency, possession, or identity. Oscillation can occur without requiring symbolic resistance to each change of direction.

Be is not the achievement of permanent stillness. It is the recognition that zero-reference was never moving with the pendulum in the first place. The oscillation changes. The configurations change. The relational expressions change. Yet the basis from which conduction occurs does not need to become any of them.

Bentov’s wild pendulum can therefore be reread as something more profound than an analogy for vibration. The pendulum does not merely swing between matter and consciousness, activity and rest, or ordinary and expanded perception. It reveals how easily movement is mistaken for origin.

The circumference appears extraordinarily active because differentiation occurs there. Identity consequently searches the circumference for stability. It attempts to secure relationships, outcomes, beliefs, possessions, explanations, spiritual states, and even awareness itself. Yet every attempt to stabilize the circumference produces another oscillation because the circumference was never designed to provide zero-reference.

The stillness Bentov pursued is therefore not somewhere at the end of the swing. It is not produced by perfect meditation, higher frequency, expanded awareness, or escape from physical Experience. It is already implicit within every apparent movement because movement never displaced the centre from which relational conduction became possible.

Metasphericality takes Bentov’s intuition and removes the final requirement for an observer who must evolve until it becomes sufficiently conscious to discover the structure of existence. Essence does not need to climb a hierarchy of consciousness toward the source. The apparent distance between Essence and source is itself an artifact of interference.

The wild pendulum keeps swinging because movement is not the problem. The attempt to derive stillness from movement is the problem. Once the circumference is no longer required to provide what only the centre can reveal, oscillation can continue without becoming captivity.

Surrender releases the demand to determine where the pendulum must go.

Allow permits the pulse to conduct without interference.

Be reveals what never swung.

Surrender. Allow. Be. - C.
